Early this morning I woke up right in the middle of a strange dream that one of my teeth was slowly disintegrating in my mouth. For a dream about a tooth it was very disturbing.
All day that dream rattled around in the back of my mind so out of curiosity I googled the top most common dreams and found some interesting results. Although the exact order varied from site to site, the five common themes that showed up repeatedly were:
2. Being Chased
3. Teeth Falling Out
4. Going Back to School
5. Wardrobe Malfunctions
I’ve always been fascinated by dreams, because I think the way our minds work when we are asleep is so funky. I think it’s weird that you can have repeating dreams, or just plain bizarre dreams where places and people and things that don’t belong together are all jumbled up in one incoherent storyline. My favorite dreams have always been flying dreams because they are so exhilarating.
There’s a lot of dreaming in the Bible too. Joseph. Pharaoh. Daniel. The prophets. I have a friend who told me that God is as present in our resting as He is in our wrestling. I find that very comforting. Psalm 127:2 says that God grants sleep to those he loves and I love that thought!
So when I wake up thinking about all my teeth falling out, I don’t know if it means I’m afraid of getting old (as one site suggested), but I do know that whether I rest through the night, or wrestle through the night, God is always right there with me.
